Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution https://www.cruisingworld.com/plastic-pollution-problem/ Wed, 05 Apr 2017 23:20:00 +0000 https://www.cruisingworld.com/?p=43102 Find out how you can help curb the damage caused by plastic pollution in our oceans.

The post Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution appeared first on Cruising World.

]]>
As many sailors know, our oceans, lakes, rivers, and coasts are littered with plastic. In fact, 8 million metric tons of plastic enters the ocean from land every year. That’s enough to cover every coastline on earth and is equal to 1.5 million cars. Plastic pollution also creates 13 billion dollars of damage to marine ecosystems in the U.S. alone.

BUT don’t get overwhelmed by the statistics. There is a way you can help fix this mess.

Marine debris impacts sailing more than any other sport. It destroys our playground, interrupts our racecourse, and kills marine life.

How can we stop 8 million tons of plastic from getting to the ocean?

It won’t be easy, but nothing in life worth doing is. One thing we know for certain – we need to stop plastic pollution at the source. Of the top 10 items found globally on beaches during the International Coastal Cleanup, 8 are plastic and are all single-use items likely only needed for a few seconds. This includes plastic beverage bottles, straws, bottle caps, grocery bags and food wrappers. If plastic is made to last forever, why do we use it to make items that are only needed for a few minutes. Along with switching to reusable items at your home and on your boat, we can join forces to work with our sailing clubs, local governments and even our favorite watering holes to get them to follow suit. The ocean needs leaders like you to stand up against plastic pollution.

Take action now – so we can get back to sailing!

Have you ever taken a leap of faith? Left the safety of the shore just for the chance – the hope – that one day you will look back and say it was all worth it?

“Uncharted Waters” explores what happens out of the spotlight’s glare for 11 athletes on their way to Rio with the US Sailing Team Sperry. While the world focuses on one race, the real story is what it takes just to get to the starting line. Giving up friends, family and school while going into debt to dedicate yourself to an obscure sport. Training alone in a makeshift gym in your garage. Recovering physically and emotionally from brutal injuries. Hoping your fate is certain while knowing that everything could change in an instant. Here are those stories:

Features US Sailing Team Sperry athletes: Paige Railey, Caleb Paine, Annie Haeger, Briana Provancha, Paris Henken, Helena Scutt, Rick Doerr, Brad Kendell, Hugh Freund, Sarah Everhart-Skeels and Cindy Walker.

Presented by Sunbrella® in partnership with the US Sailing Team Sperry.

Sailors ready for shoreside amenities after exploring the remote islands of the Southern Bahamas will find plenty to do in Long Island and San Salvador, the island where Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World in 1492.

We checked out the damage caused by Hurricane Joaquin, a category four storm that hit the islands hard just seven months earlier. After many months, San Salvador and Long Island have recovered well from the storm. People are back in their homes, hotels are completing renovations and most businesses have their doors open. Life, thankfully, is getting back to normal for both residents and visitors.

Set foot on the southern islands of the Bahamas and it doesn’t take long to see why so many cruising sailors are smitten by them. We toured a few of these gems by plane this spring, when we went to check out the damage caused by Hurricane Joaquin, a category four storm that hit the islands hard just seven months earlier. Even on the remote outposts far to the south, repairs are well underway and people are returning to their homes and businesses as life there gets back to normal.

From Reichel/Pugh: Reichel-Pugh’s next project to launch will be the 130′ Custom Racer/Cruiser with naval architecture and engineering completed in-house. The yacht is in the final stages of production at Baltic Yachts in Finland and last month was brought out of the shed to have the lifting keel fin installed. The high-strength lifting keel fin, bulb and carbon fiber keel trunk were engineered and manufactured in Italy by APM.This marks yet another successful collaboration between Reichel-Pugh and Milan-based designers Nauta Yachts, who were responsible for Exterior Styling and Interior Design. The yacht will launch later this month, to be delivered this summer.
